WildChat (toxic conversations)
Models answer toxic user turns from WildChat, the 200 highest scoring conversations per moderation category. Scored as not_unsafe rate.
OpenAI selects the toxic subset from the public WildChat corpus of 1M ChatGPT conversations.
In the authors’ words
Chatbots such as GPT-4 and ChatGPT are now serving millions of users. Despite their widespread use, there remains a lack of public datasets showcasing how these tools are used by a population of users in practice. To bridge this gap, we offered free access to ChatGPT for online users in exchange for their affirmative, consensual opt-in to anonymously collect their chat transcripts and request headers. From this, we compiled WildChat, a corpus of 1 million user-ChatGPT conversations, which consists of over 2.5 million interaction turns. We compare WildChat with other popular user-chatbot interaction datasets, and find that our dataset offers the most diverse user prompts, contains the largest number of languages, and presents the richest variety of potentially toxic use-cases for researchers to study. In addition to timestamped chat transcripts, we enrich the dataset with demographic data, including state, country, and hashed IP addresses, alongside request headers. This augmentation allows for more detailed analysis of user behaviors across different geographical regions and temporal dimensions. Finally, because it captures a broad range of use cases, we demonstrate the dataset's potential utility in fine-tuning instruction-following models. GPT-4.5 leads with 98% among models released by Feb 2025
Best score per model as labs report them in their own cards. Labs pick their own settings, so these compare less cleanly than independent runs.
The newest model with a score here came out in Feb 2025, and nobody has reported a newer one. Among the 20 highest-ranked models on the capability index, these have no score yet:
- GPT-6 Astra
- Claude Opus 5.5
- GPT-6.1 Terra
- GPT-6.1 Sol

- 1 GPT-4.5 98%
- 2 o1 97.9%

| # | Model | Score | Setting | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GPT-4.5 | 98% | Feb 2025 | Model card | |
| 2 | o1 | 97.9% | Dec 2024 | Model card | |
| 3 | o1-preview | 97.1% | Sep 2024 | Model card | |
| 4 | o1-mini | 95.7% | Sep 2024 | Model card |
3 models have held number one since its release in May 2024
Lab claims count from the day the card came out, independent runs from the model’s release.
The best score passed 85% in Sep 2024
All the scores we have, one dot each, so a model tested at several settings appears more than once.
Labs report it only in system cards
We read the headline results of 479 launch posts from 51 labs, and none of them list this benchmark. Some system cards do, below.
4 system cards report it, from 1 lab
Besides launch posts, we read the system cards, model cards and technical reports labs publish with a release. They report far more, including safety and frontier-risk tests.
